Beer Verses Polish Road

Just found the following sad tale over at the Orange website:

Beer spill CEN

A truck carrying more than 2,000 pints of beer caused chaos when it shed its load all over a busy roundabout.

The lorry – delivering booze to bars in Wadowice, Poland – left the road awash with lager after it tried to take the tight bend too quickly, say police.

And firefighters and police had to keep other motorists at bay as they tried to dodge traffic to scoop up some of the unbroken bottles.

“We had to close the road in the end.

“It was shut for four or five hours while we swept up the broken glass and hosed away the beer,” said a fire service spokesman.

How cold should a brewdog be?

I tried drinking a bottle of cold Brewdog 5 AM Saint Beer.Question: How cold should a brewdog be?

I tried finding out… But made a few mistakes:

Mistake number 1: I didn’t have a beer in the fridge.

Mistake number 2: I put the beer I had in the freezer.

Mistake number 3: I forgot about it.

Morale of the story?

Gently chill it in the fridge… or you may end up with Beer mush…

Dads Corner: Pram Shopping

I’ll come clean from the start.

Broadband Devices. I can do. TVs I can do. Put me in the middle of a garage or a car shop, and man alive I’m I in trouble! Don’t get me wrong, I can just about drive a car in a straight line on a good day, but when it comes to buying stuff for a car… I’m fairly useless.

I’m not much better when it comes to prams.

But one thing I’ve learnt fairly quickly is that if it looks good, it’s probably at least worth considering. Basically we were I a Pram Shop in town… Yes it seemed cheaper then Toys R Us, but most of the prams felt a little… Flimsy. And yes that’s what I want. I want to put our baby in something that looks like will bruise easily…. I don’t think.

Granted it had at least one decent looking pram. Something from “Mammas and Pappas”, it looked solid and multi functional… Exactly what we’re looking for… Shame the price made me back away slowly.

So it looks like we’ll be going back to Toys R Us then.

On that note. If anyone can recommend a pram… please feel free to share?

When Is An Award Ceremony, Not An Award Ceremony?

Interesting blog from the brewdog brewery:

The 2012 BII Scotland Annual Awards: Celebrating  success in the license trade in Scotland. BII are an organisation (www.bii.org) whose mission is to raise standards in licensed retail. The awards on Sunday 6th May were a huge glitzy affair held at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow.

Kerry, Mark, Neil S and Neil T attended the award ceremony. We had heard that BrewDog were expected to do quite well in the ‘Bar Operator of the Year’ category and the members of the bar team were suitable excited to see if our hard work would be recognised by this most prestigious and illustrious award.

However we were not announced as winners of the award. This disappointment was further compounded when one of the judges (seated at our table) told us in disbelief ‘this simply cannot be, the independent judging panel voted for BrewDog as clear winners of the award’.

Events took a further twist when the people who got given the award refused to accept it as it clearly had ‘BrewDog’ engraved on the trophy as winners.

On Tuesday, 2 days after the award, I (James) took a phone call from Kenny Mitchell, Chairman of the BII in Scotland and Chairman of the Award Committee explaining the situation. To directly quote Kenny:

‘We are all ashamed and embarrassed about what happened. The awards have to be an independent process and BrewDog were the clear winner’

‘Diageo (the main sponsor) approached us at the start of the meal and said under no circumstances could the award be given to BrewDog. They said if this happened they would pull their sponsorship from all future BII events and their representatives would not present any of the awards on the evening.’

To cut a long story short Brewdog have released the apology from Diageo:

‘There was a serious misjudgement by Diageo staff at the awards dinner on Sunday evening in relation to the Bar Operator of the Year Award. We would like to apologise to BrewDog and to the British Institute of Innkeeping for this error of judgement.’

I guess I cant help but wonder.

Why did the Diageo staff feel they had to make this judgement in the first place?

Happy Birthday Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D turns 20 years old

It feels like only yesterday.

The humble PC in my dads office went from being a sensible device to do sensible things on, and play sensible (ish) games with, to being upgraded to being a full blown Nazi / dog shooting experience.

And my dad found something to do with his lunch breaks.

To celebrate Wolfensteins 20th birthday, Bethesda Softworks have launched a totally free web browser version of the classic first person shooter.

Got an iPhone, it looks like theres a free ios version of the game as well.

Enjoy…

I have to admit. I would so watch this!

15 iPhone Apps Redefining College Drinking

Presented by bestcollegesonline.com:

When someone figures out how to make an iPhone dispense Bud Light, civilization as we know it will pretty much be over. Until then, there are a number of new apps hitting the market that stand to redefine the way we think of drinking in college and elsewhere. Many developers have created programs that can take away many of the risks commonly associated with college-age drinkers, while others have focused on making the experience more interactive or easier on the wallet. Here are 15 apps changing the drinking game.

  1. DRINKLOBBY

With drinklobby, you never have to drink alone again. Creator Cesar Guinovart designed the app so that people could drink and interact with other fans of similar drinks via social media. Drinklobby lets you photograph and keep track of what you’ve been drinking, share that info with friends, and even receive trophies for unlocking certain drink combos.

  2. RED CUP

The eponymous beer container of choice for college students becomes a free app, courtesy of some University of Alabama students. Students in the Tuscaloosa area are able to check which local bar has boasted the cheapest beer or shots in the last 60 minutes. And they even made it free.

  3. SECURAFONE

For parents who are concerned about their kids going off to college and drinking and driving, SecuraFone may provide some peace of mind. The app has the ability to track when a user goes over the speed limit, as well as monitor where they are at all times. It can also notify a third party when the user leaves a certain area, say, a frat house.

  4. DRUNKGUARD

This app is made available for free by professional breathalyzer company Lifeloc Technologies. An “all-in-one” BAC app, DrunkGuard gives users a sober-up timer, helps prevent drunk dialing and texting, calculates how much a user can expect to drink safely, and dials a cab service automatically. Users say the app is the next best thing to actually bringing a breathalyzer with them.

  5. SHOW ME MY BUZZ

Odds are, if you have to check an app to see if you’re too drunk to drive, you probably are. That’s the beauty of BAC calculator app Show Me My Buzz. Input your weight, how long you’ve been drinking, and how many drinks of beer, wine, and liquor you’ve had, and the app spits out your estimated alcohol level. The catch is it will recommend you call a cab, every time.
